Fun Fact: there are two kinds of sweaters you need in your life.

One is for layering: you wear it underneath blazers and coats.
It’s a chic and neat and perfect for going out to dinner (like this one)
You can wear it under a blazer. It’s a layering piece. Not necessarily for show.
More on the layering sweater here = steal my style.

The other type of sweater is the slouchy, fashiony knit.
(My fav is from Arket , I have it in white and bought it choc brown last year, need it in black)
This works on its own. It makes a statement all by itself.
It doesn’t need a jacket to look polished.
It’s loose and oversized: you feel like you can wear it without a coat and look chic.
BTW I have been telling you to buy a big slouchy sweater since 2014!
( this means Fashion moves slowly : doesn’t mean they went out and came back. It means sweaters have quietly got bigger and bigger and you didn’t even realize. Knits were so small 10 years ago )(Pull one out of the back of your wardrobe. Am I right or am I right?)
Anyway if you did what you were instructed on The FiFi Report would have already had 10 years of wear.
Isn’t that the aim of the game?
Invest early in a trend and then get mileage from your wardrobe.
And those sweaters in 2014 looked huge and now they look…well normal.

Today we are talking about those slouchy statement sweaters !
Note: I have included a few short sleeve or sleeveless knits because they are trans- seasonal. You can wear right now and then into winter. I have this one. Love it. Also great for travelling. I haven’t included cardigans either but lots here

What to look for in statement sweater?

It should have a poloneck or roll neck. Maybe balloon sleeves. Round neck works too.
I’d avoid a V neck as what do you wear under it? ( answer : this matching scarf over it !)
Big and oversized. It might just cover your bum.
Or it can be a little cropped so it meets your high waist jeans but doesn’t show the “situation”.
Go for oatmeal, brown, cream, white, navy or grey.
It might be stripe (I have this and wear on repeat)( I bought size small and it’s HUGE)
All colours are what I call ‘expensive colours’ but not necessarily so.
You don’t need to spend a fortune to look chic
( Hot pink and those other bright kooky colours – never look expensive unless they are )

My advice?

Don’t invest in black: Boring, not so flattering next to the face and tricky to style.
(black sweater + black pants = snoozefest).
Please don’t cry: Store those black sweaters you already own, or to toss back with all your high waist beige pants and groovy wide leg blue denim. Or black leather pants. Then wear with a black blazer.
Just saying if can only buy one sweater don’t spend your money on a black one.

HOW TO WEAR A SLOUCHY SWEATER:

  • It will look fabulous with leather pants in choc brown, khaki or black.
  • It will love hanging long over a long maxi flirty skirt .
  • It will adore getting a half tuck into chinos.
  • It will kiss white jeans especially in winter.
  • It will want to be layered over a shirt ( if it’s not too oversized) (with the shirt tails hanging out)
  • Check out the menswear section: quite often better cut, a little slouchier and sturdier fabric.
  • Wear your stripe knit as a scarf: work wonders tossed around your neck (see below and here)
  • Fashion tip: Buy two of the same inexpensive knits from H&M and then wear the second one around your shoulders a la Celine.
  • Chic, casual and easy to throw together.
