(Want to keep wearing everything from last year? Invest in chunky boots too).
Outerwear is where you need to spend your money.
These jackets are cool ! They will give you structure. Add a fashion edge. They might be even keep you warm. Ha!
NB: Checkout my instagram here and all the jackets I will be wearing again this season.
Everybody stopped looking ! I’ve tracked down the best jackets you need now from luxe to less.
The Barn jacket:
It’s the new shape jacket on the block. It’s a utility jacket. It’s big. It’s square. It’s cool. It’s like a peacoat but country. It might be quilted. Very practical too. Wear it with leather leggings, jeans or white chinos. Wear it layered over a knit or a white tee. With a pencil skirt and knee high boots. Go for all fifi approved colours. So brown, camel, khaki and caramel.
The khaki utility jacket:
It’s not a blazer but just as chic. It gives good coverage and shape. But it looks casual but cool. It should be long. it should have pockets. It should be slouchy so go up a size. Wear over head to toe black. Over head to toe over white. Over layers of different tones of green and khaki. Wear with jeans. Add navy under under there. Fill up the pockets and ditch your handbag. Hands free; That’s why it was invented !
The serious puffa jacket:
This is what you need to, you know, keep warm ! But why go for black? Love this one from lululemon. You should invest in a neutral , brown or even white puffa first. The light colours will make a statement. I love puffa jackets. I’ll be honest: I have so many you’d think I lived on the southern tip of New Zealand ! I have a huge black Balenciaga by HM, a white Uniqlo (the one stop shop for the best puffa jackets non?) (which I have thrown into the washing machine many times). There’s the beige puffer I pounced on 4 winters ago when beige was hard to find that colour. I wear them all. With heels and boots and sneakers.
The quilted jacket:
Remember it’s supposed to be oversized otherwise you will look like the Queen in Balmoral. You need the drama to make it chic. Make sure it’s long over the butt. Love it in Khaki. Or like this like this or even a really long vest is cool too. Wear with black leather leggings if you like the idea of slim with oversized.
The pea coat:
It’s a classic updated ! It’s back after being front and centre on the Miu Miu runway. What’s a peacoat ? It’s double breasted and shorter than a coat. Navy is the way to go so is black and but also I love camel and grey ( surprise!) They are more casual than a long dramatic coat. They look very French. Polished. Effortless. This season it’s slouchy ( of course!) and roomy though still tailored. Wear with denim jeans. Wear with white jeans. Over a knit. Over a white tee. With a flirty skirt and combat boots.
The bomber jacket:
It’s new, it’s cool, it’s also a great piece to have because it’s short . Why? Because it looks good with all your high waist pants and skirts and jeans. To show off the waist that you might have. Or give the illusion you do ! Go for brown or suede. Or denim. Even leather. It’s like a cardigan but cooler. And I am not of cardigans. But I love a bomber !
The cape:
It’s like an oversized scarf. Casual and dramatic. Love a cape because unlike a coat you can keep wearing it inside. And still look chic. You can go long and dramatic like the Toteme or short like an overgrown scarf from COS. So handy you look chic and can keep warm ! Who da thunk? So practical ! Go for camel. Brown. Grey. Wear a knit in the same colour tone. So camel with beige. Grey and grey. It just works.
The shacket:
It’s a shirt slash jacket. Get it? It’s a shacket ! It might be in denim. It might be in grey. It might be in pleather. It’s like a shirt on steroids. It’s long and oversized. Perfect for casual weekends. You toss over a polo neck knit. You toss over a white tee. Go for grey or white or taupe. You wear it undone and it just hangs like a jacket. Good with pleather leggings or pants because you get volume on top.
The crop trench:
Love a trench. So it goes without saying a crop trench is like an expresso instead of a latte. Same impact as a long trench but easier to sock down ! Again it’s more casual than a long trench. Works for travelling too. Because it’s not a huge coat that gets bulky on a plane. It should be beige, camel or neutral or beige. Ha surprise! Just so much better in a lighter colour. It should be long and slouchy for casual weekends. They’re the best !
The leather jacket:
I am not a fan of biker jackets. Very hard to pull off unless you’re a model off duty. Tricky to style. Instead if you want a leather jacket ?A short Chanel style jacket is the way to go. Feminine. Chic and very sophisticated. Black is fine ( it has texture so it’s not boring ) and looks great with high waist jeans or pants. A leather blazer is good too.
A parka.
Love and adore a parka. Celine showed a beige parka on the runway years ago and I was hooked. Suddenly not just for birdwatchers or train spotting . It needs to be in an exaggerated shape. It can be short or long like this Chic in a brown or neutral. Means you can toss it over all your old black lurking in your wardrobe. Pull on combat boots. A cool cross body bag. Suddenly you’re chic. which is the aim non?
