Blazers! The lowdown on what to buy, how to wear it #luxe to less

It’s (just about) perfect weather for blazers.
Hello oversized slouchy jacket !
Let’s talk colours.
Pick any colour that’s FiFi approved.
Go for camel (I bought this and it’s back in stock : love it), then cream/white , or brown check.
Of course Navy is chic too. Fashion is having a grey moment so invest in grey anything now.  Khaki is good to invest in as well. And leather? A leather blazer is always a good idea. ( chicer/ feminine and more versatile than a leather biker jacket)( just sayin)
The Arket camel blazer is one of my favourite pieces in my wardrobe as you can see here., I’ve been wearing it for a few years now and it’s still right ( aim: buy early in the trend get years of wear!)
Pink, red, green, purple. No, No and No! Never look expensive unless they are. Not versatile.

Go for a slouchy and oversized blazer.
It gives you a little structure and some coverage.
Adds polish. Chic. Without looking too serious.
Looks loose and summery right now with all the white in your wardrobe.
But a slouchy blazer will work straight into winter over a knit.

What to look for ?
I have said it once, and I’ll say it again:
Go for a bigger oversized shape. Shoulder pads are good.
Looks casual , effortless, modern.
Looks comfortable. And even better: it IS comfortable.
(Life is so much more casual these days : a tight tailored blazer looks too corporate).
It should be long, definitely over the bum.
Doesn’t matter if it’s double breasted or single breasted.
But here’s the thing: when it’s undone it just needs to meet in the middle, sit across and cover the ‘situation’ with room to move. Because who wears their blazer buttoned up? Nobody !
Ignore anything short, tight or with short 3/4 sleeves: doesn’t look generous.

But right now I am also loving a blazer like this:a blazer like this: the proportions look right as it gives a an illusion of a waist ! But the problem with this more tailored look is that you can’t really wear it to breakfast on the weekends with jeans and sandals . As you can do a slouchy blazer. ( I’ll do a post on other style jackets soon!)

BTW: If you are buying one single blazer: don’t buy black. Too limiting. too dark. Because when you toss it with black trousers it looks like a suit. No thanks. A black blazer when you think about it only really works with jeans or chinos. Not versatile. BUT A camel /check blazer instead? Looks low key with ALL your black pants,AND then  jeans, chinos and pleather. You’ll get the cost per wear. Nothing wrong with a black blazer pe se, it’s just not the first one to buy but definitely keep it if you have it.

Styling tricks:

  • Stick to white or neutral tones under the blazer.
  • A white tank, a white tee, blue shirt or simple knit.
  • Black tops look a bit dated under a blazer. Too dark. Wintery. It’s trickier to pull off black under it believe it or not. Default to white every time.
  • (And white next to your face takes 10 years off.)
  • A cool trend is to wear a bandeau bra under a blazer with high waist pants. Am I going to be wearing that? Nope But you can …I’ll wear it a neat white tank like this.
  • Try a neat tee under there to give some shape.

If you feel like you’re overwhelmed by too much slouch then try a big blazer instead with a narrow bottom ( to give you one !) like straight jeans and slim fit chinos. Then tuck in your tee. Push up the sleeves. It works wonders.
