A chic slouchy trousers suit: It goes from work to weekend !
The trouser suit is baaaack.
So you didn’t know it went away? Bless. (Hint: you better keep reading The FiFi Report !)
Yes, it’s been around for the last few season now and it ain’t going anywhere soon.
That’s because it’s so versatile and suits (HA!) everyone.
Plus it’s no brainer dressing. That’s why men have defaulted to wearing them for years. On and out the door.
You may think a trouser suit can look too corporate and too boring. Wrong!
Time to get your head around the idea that they’re modern and chic. Ditch the boring old fashioned notion of a shrunken single breasted blazer with too tight low rise narrow crop pants. Dated. Wrong. So out it’s about to come back in. Ha ! What you want now is a jacket and pants that are slouchy and comfortable (anything tight? never looks elegant or effortless)
The new trouser suit is so cool you will want to take it out for a drink instead of wearing it to work!
It’s an every day piece you can wear so many different ways. Obviously for the office but think about it for casual weekend with sneakers, sweaters and flats. And of course you can wear the blazer and pants separately so what’s not to love ?
WHAT TO LOOK FOR?
- A long, loose oversized blazer.
- It might have shoulder pads. This is good.
- Might be double breasted or a roomy single breasted. Just make sure it sits across “the situation”. You can’t have the gap where you can’t do up the button . IYKYK. Does nothing for no one.
- The pants are wide and/or flared, preferably long and slouchy.
- It’s all very 1970’s /2025 YSL: what’s not to love about that ?
- Pick any colour. Well, any colour means ….FiFi approved navy, taupe, grey, white, check , dark green or brown.
Black is chic but harder to style in a way because it can be too dark. Ignore hot pink, red, purple, crazy check, yikes! They make me shudder. Never look expensive unless they are. Never versatile. (Remember celebrities wear bright kooky color because they were them once. Gone. Never again. You, my dear FiFi followers, are building a wardrobe of versatile pieces to wear again and again.) - Of course come summer you will wear a sleeveless vest with the matching pants instead of a blazer. And you will also want to wear knee length shorts with a matching blazer/vest. Today we focusing on the trouser suit .
- And if you’re smart you might be a blazer with detachable sleeves like this !
MY ADVICE?
- Go for a bigger size suit.. then go crazy with shoes to change the lewk!
- Wear with a white statement tee, fine knit or a simple shell top under it.
- A round neck shirt or a pretty blouse, both great. Tuck them in.
- If you do wear a shirt with a collar then tuck it inside the jacket.
- I love the idea of wearing a tie with a trouser ( thanks YSL) but will I actually wear it ? Nope. Not sure that I can carry that off. It’s a white tee for me every time. At night of course a black tuxedo suit looks great with a dash of lace peeking out from under there.
- In terms of shoes?
- For every day trousers suit love sneakers. Got to love that. It looks so cool. Otherwise try loafers or even birks.
- I have this trouser suit from stylerunner and it’s fab with heels and sneakers.
- For the office try with pointy toe mules or flats . Mary Janes and anything with a block or kitten heel.
The good news:
You can divide up the suit of course. Duh. An oversized blazer looks fabulous with jeans. The slouchy pants love sweaters and sneakers. Scroll down for street style inspo…
I’ve tracked down the best trouser suits to take you right through to spring
