How to wear a barn jacket ? With slouchy pants + sneakers #stealherstyle
Loving a barn jacket this season.
You might call it a safari jacket or a field jacket.
Maybe a utility jacket. I call it cool!
That’s because the unstructured utilitarian shape feels new. Looks new. Looks casual yet sophisticated.
Gives the air of nonchalance ( this is good!).
What’s to love ?
It’s not a blazer, a crop trench or a parka. ( though it almost is!)
But it works just as well.
It is casual yet never boring.
You can wear it summer into winter because it’s not really a heavy winter jacket.
But because it has a casual edge it works so well with the laid back Australian lifestyle.
Totally versatile you can throw a barn jacket with slouchy pants, jeans or with a skirt.
Styling tricks:
Go for a barn jacket in a brown or neutral ( black is too heavy and dark)
Throw it back with grey pants like this but also with jeans and leather pants.
It should have pockets, it might have a cord collar , leather trim or a funnel neck.
Layer a lighter colour knit under the jacket ( don’t default to black !)
Rule of thumb : think about the same colour on the top of the body so neutral with neutral, grey and grey, khaki and khaki and the contrast should be on the bottom.
Tuck in your knit ( it can be a neat knit or later a chunky warm one)(Or white tee right now) to create shape and give the illusion (!) of a waist.
Slouchy long pants will dress up the barn jacket. Ditto a pencil skirt (like I am wearing here).
But the sneakers dress down the classic pants , a laid back edge.
Sneakers in a brown, grey and cream tone work back with the pants and jacket.
(BTW I’d store the white sneakers though not wrong.)
And of course I will wear my barn jacket with heel, boots, white mules and kitten heels. It’s the contrast of high low that makes the look interesting and takes it to another level.
A chic designer bag in brown works back with the shoes but not necessarily matches everything.
I bought this men’s barn jacket ( they call it a blouson) in brown in large. LOVE IT.
Hint: make sure it’s oversized and BIG , that what makes it look fashiony. You are not the Queen in Balmoral. It needs to make a statement.
