George Clooney Honored at MoMA Film Benefit …#MyChristmaspresent!
‘Each year, the Museum of Modern Art honors an extraordinary member of the world of cinema. At past events, such individuals as Tom Hanks, Julianne Moore, Martin Scorsese, and Laura Dern were paid tribute, and this year it was all about Mr. George Clooney.
Under normal circumstances, a Chanel-clad sea of attendees (the fashion house presents the event each year) fills MoMa’s screening room and its Saarinen red seats for a video tribute and an elegant dinner to follow. This year, however, the MoMA Film Benefit was hosted virtually. Invisible to one another, they streamed the show to watch some high-profile participants sing the praises of Clooney’ ..via Vogue
“Isn’t it dumb that we can’t all be in the same room tonight? It’s such a strange year,” Clooney, 59, began his remarks, after watching the sweet tributes.
“It’s an honor to be in the company of this incredible list of honorees,” he continued, teasing, “some are dear friends, a couple whom I don’t care for. You know who you are.”
“I fully assumed this would be a Zoom gala, so I went with ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ on top and who gives a shit on the bottom,” said Rajendra Roy, the museum’s chief curator of film.
“It’s nice to see things are finally starting to go George’s way,” jeered David Letterman.
“My parents brought me and my sister to New York. Just standing in front of the museum, I’d never seen anything like it. Then I walked inside. I was a kid from a small town in Kentucky and it opened my eyes to a whole world, a world where anything is possible. That’s what the Museum of Modern Art means to me.”
“This has been an unprecedented year. We have faced an overwhelming threat that has affected people all over the globe. But what I want to say to all of you is, ‘we’re gonna get through it,’”
“This scourge has disrupted so many lives, terrified us, wrecked our economy and left us feeling like there’s no hope. Well, now we see there is. There’s a bright light at the end of this tunnel. We’ll soon say goodbye to the dark ages, goodbye to fear, goodbye to doubt and the anxiety,” Clooney continued. “And once this is over, and Trump’s out of office, we should probably do something about COVID, too.”
“Here’s to 2021,” he finished. “We’ll see you in person then.”
