FiFi’s guide to Denim (& a dash of choc brown : It’s all I am wearing right now) #luxetoless.
Dénim, denim and more denim.
It’s what we want to wear right now.
No matter age, shape or budget we all LOVE denim.
FiFi rule numbero uno?
Update the classics !
If you have been an avid FiFi follower you can scroll down to get shopping haha
All new peeps here : start listening !
You can’t wear classics forever. They have use by date, and you can’t keep pulling out and think you look fabulous because you are wearing a ‘classic’. You know the feeling: You look in the mirror and think something is wrong”
But what could it be? You are wearing a classic blazer, jeans, trench and Tee.
Apparently they last a lifetime, are timeless.
WRONG !
All these pieces date. The length, the waist, the shoulder, the sleeve, the cut, the lapel : it all dates. Not suddenly but after about 7 years it’s time to update. ( which is why when you try to joosh up said old classics with bad accessories it just gets worse)( am I right or am I right?!)
Which brings me to culprit number one: JEANS.
Remember 10 years ago your skinny jeans were called classics? I rest my case.
Jeans are the best, quickest coolest way to instantly update your wardrobe.
As I always say: you don’t need to update everything everywhere all at once : Update your jeans and suddenly your old/current jackets, coats and knits will get another lease on life. Another season. This is good.
Remember invest in early in a trend and you get years of wear. (I’ve been wearing wide leg jeans since 2018)
SO what jeans to buy?
As one of my followers said “how many Barrel jeans is too many ?”
Made me think : did you ever say that about skinny jeans? Of course not . Because they were the new normal.
As are wide leg and barrel leg now.
NOTE: Guys I can remember way back 20 years ago trying to get women OUT of wide leg and into SKINNY: It was so hard. Of course then reversed happened and 10 years ago I ditched my skinny to wide leg. Now I am loving barrel leg , though I do love wide leg as well ). ( I hear you ask : are skinny jeans back?? Mmmm maybe but if you’re older than an 18 year old model then when you wear skinny jeans you look like you never stopped wearing them. Haha. Not good.)
One more thing: PLEASE ignore all that ridiculous advice on figure fixer dressing , as in what jeans suits your shape: Honestly NO one should have worn skinny jeans but every did because they looked COOL. End of story. Wear the fashion and don’t compromise looking modern by trying to look slim. You’ll end up looking neither.
Which brings me to my thoughts on denim this season: It HAS to be exaggerated !
You want wide super WIDE leg jeans, HIGH waist, BIG barrel and LOW low rise ( if you are so inclined)
You want a denim jacket that is really BIG and loose OR really small and tight.
You want a denim shirt that is LOOSE , with a pussy bow tie, with puff sleeeves or a peplum.
Because any denim that is neat and normal and tight is just a snooze fest: It’s your one way ticket to boring/dated dressing. Do you want to be modern , look chic, appear effortless ?
Of course you do ! ( that’s why you’re here because it‘s important to you , it makes you feel good right?)
SO what to buy now ?
Here’s what I love and been wearing and I know you will too:
Dark denim barrel here and here
Mid rise slouch in light blue barrel here. And here ,
Been wearing these Zara for a few seasons now LOVE have in every colour size 42
Wide leg dark denim like this
Straight denim – these are the best .( got size 29)
Slouchy blue denim wide leg.
Grey, brown and white jeans.
Tip: I am not a fan of spending a lot of money on denim : why would you when all the major high street brands like Zara, H&M, Mango and Uniqlo get it so right at great prices. ( they spend a fortune getting the fit right because ….they can). And I would rather spend my hard earned cash on a fabulous designer bag or on expensive jacket. It’s high low dressing at its best !
styling tips:
- As you can see below choc brown and blue denim is a match made in heaven.
- Surround your denim with brown accessories, add a choc brown peacoat or brown leather jacket.
- Try white shoes with everything otherwise brown loafers or kitten heels.
- Add a choc brown belt and any size ( big tote to clutch) brown or tan bag.
- You want to layer up double denim. Still cool.
- Rule of thumb: wear the same colour knit as your jacket. So a brown knit and brown jacket, a grey knit and grey jacket. A black knit and black jacket . Just tones of the same colour colour. Add jeans in any colour: EASY.
- My default is to wear a cream/white roll neck knit or skivvy under everything.
- Hint; I nearly always size up into a size bigger in denim so the waist is comfy and the muffin situation is not too squished. Don’t I know it.
- I would not roll my jeans unless they are carrot leg. Otherwise turn up wider leg flat by a handspan .
- For tall peeps : there is ASOS tall section of Jeans.
In terms of shoes: - I love barrel jeans because they are shorter and thus look great with a kitten heels or loafers.
- Wide leg jeans should be really long and (to me ) only look good with flats like loafers or pointy flats.
- Again it’s the nothing in between neither here nor there length that looks daggy ( yee gods noooo !)
- Meaning? Go for ankle showing short jeans or long to floor because any length in between looks just that.
Here are my picks below and some inspo shots to help with styling .
As always everything is linked over on LTK.
