Need now: Fabulous trench coats #luxetoless

This week Mamamia asked me to share my favourite outfit I love to wear on repeat.
I had to confess even though I do love repeating an outfit – it’s the FiFi philosophy to get mileage from your wardrobe – I actually reach repeatedly for one single item .

A trench coat !

I have about 8 and counting.
I should be in trench rehab because I love them so much.
I have in every price point from luxe to less. On rotation.
I have a classic Burberry trench, a Theory trench in navy and three from Uniqlo ( BTW Lemaire for Uniqlo is fabulous, he used to design Hermès !) in choc brown and beige.
I love my H&M beige trench ( it was great for travel – when we used to – because you don’t care if it tossed in an overhead locker on the plane and it’s machine washable).
I adore the beige vintage 70’s Aquascutum one from my mother .

What’s to love about a trench ?

It will joosh up everything you own from jeans to chic black leather pants.
You will always look sophisticated. And chic.
So versatile you can wear a trench to the opera over a little black dress and heels .
Then throw the exact same trench over jeans, a tee and Birkenstocks on the weekend.
Summer, Autumn, winter, Spring.
Talk about mileage and cost per wear.

My styling tips:

Veer away from a black trench.
Too dark, Not versatile. It brings every down.
Instead invest in a trench in beige, brown or camel and watch as it instantly lightens up your life.
It will joosh up all your basic black pieces but also love white and neutrals.

FiFi philosophy numero uno: update the classics.

They NEVER last forever. Sorry to say.
That short tight single breasted trench you own? Needs to be stored !
Invest right now in an extra long trench , that’s double breasted and oversized.
That’s the new modern shape and will last you for 5 years or more. (BTW I’ve been talking about this shape of trench for about 5 years now so if you bought waaay back then you’ll get 10 years of wear).
Hint: Always buy a size or two bigger. All my uniqlo trenchcoats are in XL !
