Relaxed party dressing . It’s about being chic

Relaxed party dressing . It’s about being chic, slightly dressed up but looking effortless. Feeling relaxed. You don’t want to look too overdressed or too try hard !
This is not black tie but it’s not beach dressing either. It might be drinks, BBQ, dinner or a New Year’s party .

The secret :  Table top dressing. Which is how you dress from the waist up. You want the attention and focus on top of the body (everything else is hidden under the table!) 
Which is why I nabbed this fabulous Marant Etoile silver top from @netaporter (It’s on sale and I could not resist. )

Yes, it’s very dramatic with those huge shoulders (!) and the glamorous shimmery fabric BUT the shape is actually really just a relaxed simple tee shirt.
Because when you have rich luxe fabrics you don’t need frills, flounces or anything too tricky in the design. Keep it simple so there is only one element that is getting all the attention.

The trick with any sparkly statement top?  Dress it down with casual low key pants !
I’m talking jeans, cotton chinos or slouchy pants. Think contrasts. It’s the DNA of effortless chic: tough with pretty, casual and dressy, with soft and hard. It’s the modern chic way to dress don’t you think?

So I decided to style this fabulous silver top @netaporter with white grey jeans. Then with grey jeans . I couldn’t decide!

A question I am often asked: What are good travel pants? Also what to wear on the plane? Also Help , I am going overseas what to pack ?

Everybody stop looking ! I have found the best travel outfit & it’s all from @lululemonausnz (including bag and sneakers).

Let’s start with this sensational grey jacket @lululemonausnz  Love and adore a balloon sleeve. Totally day to evening.
The fabric is very glamorous almost silky. Especially in sophisticated grey. (Big colour for next season too!)

You’ll wear this grey jacket with a white tee & black pants but also with jeans & leggings. Going out to a gallery, lunch or maybe dinner ? Toss it on over a cashmere knit with black pleather pants or skirt with heels and a clutch.

It’s THE perfect travel jacket: It has a zippered pocket with a hidden phone sleeve (YES!). Water resistant it has a sneaky hood that sits inside the collar. And the waist cinches in so you can create shape when you need to.

Please nab these fabulous @lululemonausnz black pants!  Super chic & so damn soft & comfortable you won’t want to take them off. (you won’t if you’re on a 24 hour flight !)
( My travel tip: throw the grey leggings in your carryon and change into them to sleep on the plane) Side pockets : Yes ! Elastic waistband : Yes ! Breathable : Yes ! Machine washable : Yes !
 I am obsessed with this black bag @lululemonausnz ,quite incredible for the price ($189!!)( whaaaat?) Love the clever exterior sleeve that sits over your carryon trolly handles. Yes ! It has a removable, adjustable shoulder strap & a sneaky top quick-access phone pocket . The generous size fits a 16″ laptop but will easily go in the overhead locker or under the seat.

While you’re in @lululemonausnz grab an extended shoulder white tee, some sneakers and a belt bag ( ordered this in grey to match my lewk) Essential for travel. But you know that !

FiFi philosophy!
Don’t compromise looking modern by trying to look slim. You’ll end up looking neither.

Meaning ?

Time and again I hear women say about slouchy clothes “ I can’t wear that, it makes me look bigger”. So? Who cares if you look bigger ?

Looking slim is not the end game!

And when you think about it the word “ flattering” is really just another word for slim right ?

Personally I’d rather look modern & chic than worry about whether something will make me look slimmer.

Because what happens is when you will try to style something to make it flattering /slimming quite often ( not always !) it will not be modern. And you won’t look smaller either. You end up in no man’s land looking neither slim nor modern.

My advice : own it & just wear the damn fashion !

When you start trying new shapes & silhouettes your eye changes and suddenly you get used to new proportions.
It’s about updating the classics and embracing the fashion & the new ways of styling.
Whatever age or shape you are.

The thing is : ALL those ridiculous rules about dressing for your shape are all based on the idea of looking slimmer !

And the problem is those so called “figure fixer” rules CHANGE. Because fashion changes. ( that’s why we love it)
And women hold on to those old fashioned rules.
But they’re not set in stone.
No wonder you’re struggling to get dressed!

In my opinion looking slimmer is not the aim.
Looking modern & chic is what I’m interested in.

Right now it’s about :
Baggy + baggy = Yes
Baggy + neat = cool
Neat + neat = wrong

Of course getting dressed is about feeling great so please wear what you feel good in !
For me I FEEL great in Farshun & feel modern in new silhouettes whether they’re slimming or not .

So please stop compromising looking modern by trying to look slim : you’ll end up looking neither.

It’s the season for skirts .
Perfect for summer : it’s easy, simple dressing.

One of my favorite skirts is this white denim skirt from @cosstores_au last year. Love it. The white denim means it’s as casual as jeans but the shape is as effortless as a dress. Toss a utility vest over a white tee, pull on white strappy heels and you’re good to go !

As you can see (Swipez vous 👉) I have a bit of a skirt uniform . (Why not ? It means you know your own style! )

It’s pretty clear I tend to gravitate to A line skirts, a shoulder pad tee and some kind of strappy ( usually white !) sandal.
All these outfits are just variations of a theme. ( some are from a few years ago)( I’ll still be wearing them again this season !)( yes, I actually WEAR my own wardrobe!)

The styling trick ?
Keep it simple !
Stick to “expensive” colours in modern shapes: we’re talking skirts that are now midi, A line wrap or pleated. A tee with big shoulders. A top with cutaway shoulders. Oversized or with a roomy cut. In black or white.
No need for crazy kooky colours or mad accessories.
Because when you update to new modern shapes the clothes do all hard work for you. They instantly look chic & effortless. You don’t need to fuss & joosh & fluff around trying to make it work. You just put on a skirt & a tee, slide into heels : done.
You’re out the door.

It’s Party time! Woo hoo. Whether it’s Christmas drinks or a New Year’s Eve celebration it’s time to get out of the activewear and practical dad sandals ( yes, I am talking to you!) into something glamorous, chic and festive.

OMG : What to wear?!

It’s easy:
You need black. You need white. You need brown.
Then mix it up with a sprinkle of metallics, gold, silver and sequins. The good news is that this trend is here to stay: It’s time to go cray, cray and invest in anything sparkly and shiny. And it’s nice to know you’ll get more than one season of wear.

Remember you don’t necessarily always need a NEW dress, new top or outfit ( don’t worry I have found lots of chic ones !) but if you need a new lewk the best way to joosh up your current wardrobe is with a few sensational standout bags! Shoes ! Earrings!

Accessories are not just for Christmas. (Like kittens and puppies 😆 ). They are perfect for glamorous dressing all year round. Which means you’re not just buying something that’s a one off; Think of accessories an investment dressing with excellent cost per wear.

Yes, I do actually wear dresses !
Obviously summer is when I reach for a dress .
Cool. Chic. Easy.
Throw it on & out the door .

When I spied this black dress @hm a few months ago I pounced on it. (And frustratingly it was not available online because I would have shared it immediately) (it’s now online in white )( be quick !)

I have a shoulder pad obsession: which is why I love this dress : an extended shoulder add drama , a fashion edge, take an average little ol shirt dress from drab to fab.

And can we talk about how it’s so voluminous !
Alot of fabric in the skirt: which is what makes it look expensive and chic.
Any exaggeration is a good thing in fashion : it gives the allure of generosity and looks like no expense spared.
(Ignore the fact that I will need to put aside two hours to iron it every time I go out !)

Of course this silhouette (a big skirt, wide shoulders ) means the nipped in waist gives good shape: you’re not totally overwhelmed & lost in masses of black fabric .

Oh and did you know summer is the best time to wear black ?
That’s because the bare arms & legs add a little freshness & break up the monotone. ( all black in winter can be harder to carry off as it often looks shapeless = snoozefest)

Styling tips:
Add white shoes , either mules or flat sandals to lighten the look ( though black, brown or silver shoes would work here too). Grab a hobo bag in black or tan & white sunglasses

Invest early in a trend, get seasons of wear !
This blazer @arketofficial I think it’s 5 years old.
The jeans ? @zara maybe 3 years old.
The shoulder pad tee @thefrankieshop the same.
And I have been wearing white mules since forever ! Maybe 10 years? I just keep wearing them out & then invest in a new pair to repeat wear. These are @loewe by @tonybianco lols.

My superpower ( if you had one!) is to forecast fashion :
Here are the pieces you should look out for as you shop the sales…in no particular order …you’re welcome 😎

* A sharp shoulder blazer
Oversized yes but with a little tailoring & drama in the cut - avoid black as too limiting.

* A long trench ( duh of course !)in neutral.
Slouchy & loose but with SHOULDERS

* A crop jacket; They’re so right with high waist pants & show off your waist ( create shape) with baggy pants . I can’t get enough of them. Be warned!

* Anything choc brown or khaki ; LOVE

*Anything in brown suede : ADORE

* Any tops or shirts with dramatic big sleeves.

* An oversized designer tote in brown or black. That’s where I will spend my money !! Stay tuned for my picks …

* A designer belt : elevates everything.

* Stirrup pants ( they’re coming !)

* Any matching sets linen or cotton or knits , trousers suits.
Will definitely get another season or two.

* Bermuda shorts : next summer you will wear them.

* Black or grey baggy barrel jeans ( I’m on the hunt !)

* A barn / utility/ worker jacket in neutral or khaki
Yes they are HUGE for next season.

* A leather jacket : cut like a blazer or a crop trench ( leather biker jackets ? Way too hard).

* Slouchy wide leg pants & A line midi skirt are both here for a few more seasons. Look for fabrics that work across seasons (rather than linen or flimsy cotton)( buy linen but don’t spend a lot !)

* Black or brown pleather slouchy baggy pants. Always

* A touch of animal print in accessories : it’s a trend lurking around the corner, all the print you should own!

*Flats shoes , kitten heels, strappy sandals. Here to stay.

What to ignore :
Fringing, sheer, neon, kooky colours, frumpy florals, cutouts, BOHO no no no (!) anything frilly & fussy or short & tight .

Here’s the thing: It’s ok to have a uniform. I

It means you know your style.
You know what works for you , what you feel good in , what pieces you can rely on.

But !

You need to make sure you always update these key pieces into new, modern shapes.
You can’t keep wearing the same old white tee and camel pants forever. That’s because ALL classics date. Sorry.
The shapes, cut, silhouette, waist, lapel, length , shoulder ALL change over the years.
The good news : if you buy early in the trend you’ll get years of wear.

Take these fabulous camel pants @lululemonausnz
(Yes, @lululemonausnz !). With a super wide leg and a mid to high waist they are cut like a jean. This is good. They’re totally versatile. Stretchy and comfortable they’re in the best camel colour & so will easily go from summer straight into winter. The length is long & groovy.
All these things add up = Chic & modern.

This white tee ? It’s also updated into a new shape. This is not a tight white tee that you wear hidden under jackets .
This Frankie shop Tee from @netaporter has major shoulder pads & in a sturdy fabric so it doesn’t cling. It’s meant to be worn as a statement piece. I have three. I live in them. They give good arms & add a fashion edge where a plain little ol white tee would look exactly that …snoozefest.

Styling tip:
keep the tonal theme happening with brown, tan or white accessories. I’ve pulled on brown mules @thedom_au the perfect height under these long pants.

It’s about keeping the focus & attention on top of the body where everyone is looking .

What’s the point of having the most exciting piece you’re wearing hidden under the table? No one is looking down there !

(Note: it’s almost irrelevant whether you’re at a table or not , it’s really just a way of dressing).

The idea : Build a wardrobe of fabulous tops, statement blouses , standout jackets , all the pieces that warrant attention on the top. Then invest in low key , simple pants, skirts & jeans on the bottom.

The thing is: if you do wear a crazy print skirt ( ahem!) or mad crazy trousers then what the hell do you wear on top? Not anything that’s going to compete right? No, No, No ! You’ll put on a boring top . And what’s the point of that ? What a waste.

Reverse it !

Wear a fabulous statement piece on top where it will get the most attention, then invest in simple pants & skirts in a plain colours ( updated of course in a modern shapes) that are not a major attention seeker but rather the work horse of your wardrobe.

The best news:

Table top dressing makes shopping instore soooo much easier & quicker: you’ll automatically walk past & ignore the bottoms that are screaming for attention. And instead you will confidently head to the rail with fabulous tops, chic blazers, gorgeous blouses. Those are the pieces that will pack a punch , make a statement and you’ll love wearing.

Sometimes you just need a dress. A chic dress for a long lazy lunch, a relaxed dinner or for a casual Christmas Day. You want to look jooshed up, polished but low key.
A little festive but relaxed right ?

I’ve done the hard work for you & found 20+ fab dresses !

Here’s what you need:  A dress that is long – in a dramatic shape – over the knee or ankle length. In a fit and flare shape. One shouldered. Maybe tiered or with puff sleeves. (The fashion edge is coming from the strong architectural shapes ).
 Keep the colours classic : navy, black, taupe, white, khaki , and choc brown …of course.
Yes, in terms of colour I will allow a chic blue, a graphic print or a khaki. Ha ! Why? Because this is NOT about building a wardrobe of versatile separates in chic versatile colours: A dress is just a one off occasion that hardly needs any styling.
 Keep away from pesky old fashioned prints and frumpy little florals (too tricky and ageing) ( But you know that) (Oh you don’t ? Keep reading The FiFi Report!)

Accessories:
You are NOT a Christmas tree: with glitter and everything going on ! Keep it simple, understated and chic. Flat sandals look totally modern. So comfortable  A camel /tan flat, a metallic silver /gold sandal will add a modern edge, keep it looking low key. Effortless.  Of course black is fine if it’s sexy & strappy.

Go for a small clutch or shoulder bag in metallic, black or tan. White is good too. Throw on a major earring or a statement cuff.
It’s as easy as that !

Black pants are a pivotal , pivotal (!) part of your wardrobe .
That’s because ( if you get the right pair ) they are totally versatile & become the foundation piece of so many outfits.

But here’s the thing : classic black pants need to be updated into new modern shapes.
