Outerwear is where you need to spend your money. It’s the piece that is seen first. It makes a statement.
A jacket will finish the look, add a fashion edge, some polish, cover up all sorts of ‘situations’.
The new shape in jackets ?
It’s shorter ! I am talking a cropped blazer, a crop trench, a bomber, a parka or a utility jacket.
( don’t worry I’m also including longer blazers here too…just nabbed this and love it).(I’ll wear over all white)
Why:
Because suddenly a short crop jacket looks fresh, feels new
It’s a new proportion from the long slouchy blazer we have been wearing forever.
Because a short crop jacket loves flared skirts, high waist pants and baggy jeans. Because it meets all those pieces in the middle. It gives definition , you can see your waist ( even if you don’t have one (!)) it gives good shape.
Because a short jacket is so right for spring.
They are easy with a laid back feel. Light enough for now and purrfect for traveling as they are trans-seasonal too.
Because a short casual jacket is bit more low key than a blazer. Most of these jacket below have an almost a sporty feel, a relaxed vibe. Where a blazer might feel toooo joosh a crop jacket is almost a cardigan! ( and I hate cardigans : shapeless and frumpy : A crop jacket is so much cooler).
What to look for :
It’s about a shorter length jacket rather than a long blazer or over the bum jackets. ( though I have included a few below because they are still right). Think a bomber jacket, a utility jacket, a short denim jacket, a crop short trench. Loving a crop blazer a la Chanel that sits on the waist. Loving anything with a funnel neck. Loving anything with shoulder pads.
Look for all FiFi approved colours; Camel, cream, grey, chocolate, brown or khaki. Duh! Check is good. Black is ok. White? Of course ! Always beige and camel. It might have pockets, epaulettes, or a cinched in waist. It might have a zip or be more a shacket , it might be a barn jacket, it might be a collarless linen jacket .
Chanel style tweed ? Yes. But it can be tricky to pull off as it can look frumpy. I would avoid those unless you wear with something cool like baggy jeans and white heels ( if it’s the real Chanel you will be OK , haha). Oh and please walk past those military napoleon jackets ( they’re a big trend BUT too tricky, too busy, too look at me, one season pony. Don’t waste your money!)( you’re welcome ).
And please ignore that silly idea in your brain that says you need a long jacket to cover your bum. Stoopid idea. Wear the damn fashion ! FiFi philosophy : Don’t compromise looking modern by trying to look slim: you end up looking neither.
How to wear it:
It’s your go to jacket right now into spring : every day over a white tee or tank.
Over a blue button down shirt? Yes, but tuck in the collar. ( collars annoy me sometimes because they are messy!).
Yes, a long tee is fine under a crop jacket: it works! It’s just about getting your eye used to the different styling. (See the Chanel and the street style below)
Try a crop jacket with slouchy camel chinos, with baggy pants, slouchy blue jeans, your favourite white jeans and barrel leg pants. (A short jacket is soo good with the Uniqlo Barrel pants !). Try a crop jacket with high waist A line skirts. With all your bermuda shorts or a pencil skirt. It’s the perfect proportion. And why not try a crop trench with a lace trim skirt like Henne? It’s cool.
What do I personally reach for again and again ? A crop trench/bomber over a white tee with jeans and also with skirts. With chinos. With baggy pants. Here’s the thing: a long blazer can be too voluminous with barrel leg jeans don’t you think? It can tricky! Now grab your bomber or crop trench : aha ! Now THAT works right? Tip: the hem of the jacket doesn’t need to meet the top of your pants or skirt. It’s fine to show a little bit of a white tee/knit if it’s too short.
Best tip? If you are in doubt : default to all white under everything. A khaki/brown jacket that might look wintery? Toss it over a white tee and slouchy white pants . Fresh, chic. Easy. DONE!
