It’s the piece that is seen first. It makes a statement. Your underneath pieces don’t have to.
This season? It’s all about the short jacket!
This time last year I wrote “Don’t get me wrong I will keep wearing my long blazers and peaocoats. But I am FEELING that the shorter jacket is right. And it’s all I keep wearing to be honest. I just know that this shape is coming, that it’s on the fashion horizon and that can only mean one thing : Invest now ! When FiFi sniffs out a trend you best get cracking ! We will see what’s on the runways for winter at Fashion month ( happening now!) and I know it will be a trend.”
And Yessireee…wow is it a trend !
Most obviously when THE hottest chicest designer Mathieu Blazy has a crop blazer as his opening look for Chanel ( and then so many short jackets in his latest collection- see main pic) you know it’s happening thang !
Why:
Because suddenly a short crop jacket looks fresh, feels new.
It’s a new proportion from the long slouchy blazer we have been wearing forever.
Because a short crop jacket loves flared skirts, high waist pants and baggy jeans. Because it meets those pieces in the middle. It gives definition , you can see your waist ( even if you don’t have one (!)) it gives good shape.
Because a short jacket is so right for Autumn.
They are easy, toss on jackets that have a laid back feel. They add a fashion edge. Light enough for now but still perfect for layering in winter. Purrfect for traveling as they are trans-seasonal.
This is a casual jacket, a bit more low key than a blazer. Love the idea that it has an almost a sporty feel, a relaxed vibe. Where a blazer might feel too joosh a crop jacket is almost a cardigan! ( and I hate cardigans : shapeless and frumpy : A crop jacket is so much cooler).
What to look for :
It’s about a shorter length jacket rather than a long blazer or over the bum peacoat. ( though I have included a few below because they are still right). I am talking about a leather jacket , a suede jacket, a utility jacket, a short denim jacket, a short trench, a crop peacoat and a bomber. It might even be a crop blazer a la Chanel and sit on the waist.
Look for all FiFi approved colours; Camel, cream, grey, chocolate, brown or khaki. Duh! Black is ok. Maybe white. Always beige and camel. It might have pockets, epaulettes, or a cinched in waist. It might be more a shacket , it might be a barn jacket. Look for cotton, for wool twill, for denim. Maybe leather.
Chanel style tweed ? Yes. But it can be tricky to pull off as it can look so frumpy. I would avoid those unless you wear with baggy jeans and edgy heels (though if it’s the real Chanel you will be OK , haha).
And please ignore that silly idea in your brain that says you think you need a long jacket to cover your bum. Stoopid idea. Wear the damn fashion ! FiFi philosophy : Don’t compromise looking modern by trying to look slim: you end up looking neither.
How to wear it:
It’s your go to jacket right now into autumn: every day over a white tee or tank.
Over a blue button down shirt? Maybe but tuck in the collar. ( collars annoy me sometimes because they are messy!).
In winter obviously a short jacket looks fab layered over a knit, a rib knit or a chunky knit. Yes, a long knit in winter looks great under a crop jacket: it works! It’s just about getting your eye used to the different styling. (See the Chanel and the street style below)
Try a crop jacket in the warm autumn weather ( if you need it on chilly summer nights)(or you live in Melbourne or NZ!) with slouchy camel chinos, baggy pants, baggy jeans, white jeans and barrel leg pants. ( I am talking to you Uniqlo Barrel pants !). Try a crop jacket with high waist A line skirts. With shorts or a pencil skirt. It’s the perfect proportion.
BTW if these jackets seem a little dark and wintery while it is sunny out there , imagine any of these jackets over white jeans and white tee. With heeled toe thongs , with white net sandals, with sneakers and white heels…Got it?
FYI: I am loving my crop trench coats and wear both all the time over a white tee with jeans and with skirts. With chinos. With baggy pants. It’s what I reach for time and again instead of my long blazers. Last winter I absolutely lived in my crop camel jacket. Now I am seriously hankering after a short utility jacket. Or most definitely a short peacoat for winter. Anything with a funnel neck (like this !)(Can’t wait to wear it again!)
Tip: the hem of the jacket doesn’t need to meet the top of your pants or skirt. It’s fine to show a little bit of a white tee/knit if it’s too short. And it’s fine if the jacket is longer too. See inspo below.
