All the key pieces that I think are worth investing in and spending money on.
Because these are pieces that are just starting to go up the groove Richter scale.
Invest early in the trend and get seasons of wear !
As always I am saying no need to buy everything here but pick and choose what you know you will get the most mileage from, great cost per wear. These are all instant wardrobe updaters to insert into your current wardrobe.
Hint: I will be wearing pants but the Miu Miu runway shot just gives you the idea . Lots of options below !
A sharp shoulder jacket:
Think YSL like this : You need a serious blazer or jacket with big sharp shoulders: A jacket like this gives good waist. Gives good attitude. Looks modern and sharp . Wear with jeans. Wear as a suit. Wear over a white tee.
A big of orange !
Don’t die of shock but a bit of orange ( or red ) because it just loves camel, white and neutrals. It’s the way to insert a little colour if that’s what you crave. I think the best way to wear it is with a knit you can wear around your shoulders in winter. (I’m not sure keen on black with a colour : looks jarring to me and bit cheap). Come summer try an orange T shirt with a camel cotton skirt or chinos. Or try orange or red sneakers with a big camel coat or with denim.
Capri pants:
Yes, they are coming so invest now. Like shorts, but neater. Like narrow pants but shorter. They work with big oversized blazers and crop oversized tops. They look new which is what is attractive right? I will wear with a kitten heel rather than with flats. I think black or camel is what you want.
Bermuda shorts:
I’ve been talking about knee length shorts for a few seasons now. Invest now. They might be denim. ( cut off and hem any old jeans that are now the wrong length). They might be cotton twill. They might be in a floppy slouchy fabric. You wear with a strappy sandal or right now in winter with knee high boots ( no gap). Love this look at Dissh. Blazer, shorts and those cute heeled thongs= yes. Best in black, brown or white. Denim is great. Just go for FiFi approved colours and you can’t go wrong. Lots of great shorts here at Dissh.
A car coat:
So just so you know I have been talking about big oversized long coats for a long time now ( since 2014!). That doesn’t mean they have gone away and come back , no, it means that fashion moves slowly and all that time ( 10 years) coats have progressively got longer and bigger and slouchier. And available to all. (You have seen my coat collection so you know I love them !) But right now a shorter coat looks new to me. It’s called a car coat. It’s still big but it’s knee length or shorter and it might be single breasted. It works with capri pants (so 90’s) and things like that often go hand in hand. Please don’t panic your long oversized coat is still so right for a few years more for sure but as a fashion forecaster I know these shorter coats are coming !
A peplum top:
Yes, a peplum top is back and I am happy for it. What’s great about a peplum is that is an exaggerated shape so it’s a statement top. Meaning? You put it on and it’s doing all the hard work for you. Instant impact. With that frill you cover your ‘situation’ which is good. Probs best with pants and jeans. Looks chic with a pencil skirt (a denim is what I will wear a lot) because an A line skirt or full skirt is just too much fabric. Strapless is one way the way to go and who knows in summer I might just wear it ! Otherwise stick to a peplum T shirt, there will be heaps around come summer.
A touch of lace:
It’s a happening trend, a touch or a trim of lace peeking out, Very Phoebe Philo at Old Celine. It might be a camisole with a lace trim worn under a blazer. A skirt with a lace hem. You don’t need much. It’s just a little bit of frou frou that works. And I might mention the word SHEER here ! See through skirts a la YSL are very on trend. And in lace too. I love it. Will I wear it? Possibly with a long blazer if I went out to alot for events. Love sheer lace pants as well for summer in black with a long top that covers what I want to hide lols…Stay tuned.
Accessories:
A modern bold pendant:
It’s really is all you need in the jewellery department apart from a bold cuff. It needs to be big and sculptural and make a statement. This is not a an itty bitty little shy piece. Sure multiple necklaces ( don’t just do one !) are also a big trend but it’s not minimalist me. But if that’s your vibe then layer up pearls and necklaces but ditch the earrings and the bracelets. Only one area needs attention.
A net /mesh sandal
I bought them last year and love them. Wore all through Provence! Lucky me. The thing is that because they are sheer and you can see the toes so it gives an airiness to the foot. You can see some skin but your foot is covered up. Oh and they are cool. And comfortable. Very good reason! I love white but black or even red is a great way to add colour. Oh and boat shoes are a thang too. These are good , totally miu miu!
A silk graphic scarf:
It’s a tricky accessory to carry off : I see the trend is to wear it tied on the side of your pants. I am not sure if I can pull that off it off. Can look too try hard and a bit old lady ! I will definitely wear a head scarf , so Jackie O and a great way to add a graphic print without you know ..wearying a print .haha. Go for a scarf in creams and browns, graphic not a floral print , stripe is good. Check out the latest Celine show for the styling.
Big bold sunglasses :
The bigger the better. Sunglasses are such a great instant wardrobe updater. Go for a brown or tortoiseshell if you wear a lot of browns or go for black if you wear a lot of that. You don’t need to spend a lot of money but a little bit of designer goes a long way ! Note: like a lot of things in fashion it’s about exaggerated shapes so if you can’t do big sunglasses then go very small. It’s the in between that’s boring nowheresville of nothingness. These are my favs!
An oversized bag ( leather, canvas, might be a straw).
Yes, big oversized bags are what’s happening right now in fashion. Or as I mentioned above, small neat bags are cool too. I’d still recommend a tan or brown bag ( black is not wrong but first choice is brown). And what’s not to love about a big bag that you throw everything in?
