Trench coats: Love. Want. Need. #Luxetoless
Oh la la . I suddenly had an outrageous thought.
I realized I haven’t done a post on trenchcoats since last year! OMG.
So let me present the best trench coats:
Why you want them. How to wear them. At every price
I have about 10 trench coats and counting.
( I swear they are ALL different !)
(I love them so much, I should be in trench rehab)
I have in every price point from luxe to less. On rotation.
And I actually wear them all. ( nothing wrong with a uniform, means you know your style).
Because here’s the thing about a trench : It doesn’t have to be raining to wear one !
I have a Burberry trench which I don’t wear any more. Why? It‘S too short, tight and wrong arm and shoulders and sleeves. You see even a Burberry trench coat dates, you can’t wear it forever.( Don’t listen to anyone who says otherwise; Sure I might wear again in 15 years)( But right now it’s wrong ). ( this Burberry trench is the one.
I have a Theory trench in navy which I have stored. I have three, oops make that four trench coats from Uniqlo ( BTW Lemaire for Uniqlo is fabulous, he used to design Hermès !) in choc brown, one in white and another in beige.
I have an H&M trench or have a Zara trench : great for travel because you don’t care if it’s tossed in an overhead locker on the plane and it’s machine washable. You can thrash them and they can take it. It’s not precious. I have a fabulous trench from Dissh .( it was gifted and I LOVE it). Oh and this khaki one from Marks & Spencer ( it’s a winner in the colour and the clever details). Did I mention my waterproof totally chic and incredibly praticable trenchcoats from lululemon ? I can’t recommend more ! and I can’t forget the sensational vintage Aquascutum one from my mother.
Why I am sharing my list?
You can see I am an expert haha and know a lot about them. ( Could write PHD thesis haha)
It also proves how vital – and versatile – trench can be in your wardrobe.
And because most importantly a trench is available at all price points.
What’s to love about a trench ?
It will joosh up everything you own. From jeans to slouchy black leather pants.
You will always look sophisticated. And chic.
So versatile you can wear a trench to the opera over a simple black dress and heels.
Then throw on the exact same trench over jeans, a tee and Birkenstocks on the weekend.
Summer, Autumn, winter, Spring.
Oh and it might just keep you dry in the rainy weather.
And warm in winter. Who da thunk!
Talk about mileage and cost per wear.
FiFi philosophy:
Classics like a trench NEVER last forever. Sorry to say.
That short ( knee length ) tight single breasted trench you own?
Needs to be stored. Aurevoir. Goodbye. Adios.
( it’s out it will be back in soon. I am not joking)
Invest right now in an extra long trench , mid shin or longer . I prefer double breasted and oversized.
That’s the new modern shape and will last you for 5 years or more. (BTW I’ve been talking about this shape of trench for about 9 years now so if you bought waaay back in 2016 then you’ll already had years and years of wear).( you’re welcome).
Styling tips:
Veer away from a black trench.
Too dark, Not versatile. It brings everything down. Boring.
It’s outerwear that counts: it’s the first thing people see. It’s the piece that’s going to make statement.
If you have to buy one single trench? invest in a trench in beige, brown, khaki, white or camel .
Watch as it instantly lightens up your life.
It will joosh up all your basic black pieces but also loves going out with white and neutrals.
( a black trench is not wrong just not the first one to buy) ( Walk past and close your eyes if you see any trench coats in purple or red or horrid green or lime )( never versatile. Looks cheap. Hurts my eyes!)
Always buy a size or two bigger if it’s too neat. All my Uniqlo trenchcoats are in XL and some were on sale, you don’t need to spend a fortune to look chic !
If you’re height challenged or petite then there are a few knee length trenchcoats around and they will be long on you. Remember to check the height of the model , that will give you an indication of the length.
You want a long trench : avoid at all costs a knee length trench because it needs to be the same length as your midi skirt : A short trench over a longer skirt arrggggg ! Please no ! A long trench over a short skirt? Yes !
Also if you want a neater fit, maybe you feel overwhelmed by too much fabric then choose a trenchcoat with a shoulder seam not raglan sleeve ( it’s cut on the angle and can be tricky if you have narrow or sloping shoulders !).
