How to be chic on casual weekends or when you’re living your best every day life?
I’ve got one word to say to you: Jackets.
Namely short jackets.
We are talking utility jackets, a crop trench, shackets, and everything in between.
It’s the secret to effortless casual dressing.
Why?
They instantly joosh up everything in your wardrobe. Adds a fashion edge.
(Want to keep wearing everything from last year? Invest in white shoes)
These jackets love high waist jeans ( That’s why they were invented !) and high waist skirts.
They especially love barrel jeans or slouchy pants because they create shape: show off your waist.
Remember outerwear is where you need to spend your money.
It’s the piece that is seen first. It makes a statement. (Underneath pieces don’t have to).
These are the new shape jackets: Easy to toss on with a laid back feel.
Light enough for spring ( and into a Melbourne summer!) and perfect for traveling as they are trans-seasonal.
All great alternatives to a blazer. (I have included a suede blazer )( but any slouchy neutral blazer is always right.)
Everybody stopped looking !
I’ve tracked down the best ( mostly ) short crop casual jackets you need now from luxe to less.
I am not saying you need all these jackets ( confession: I think I do!) but pick and choose what suits you, your life and budget. If you buy one single thing this season make it a utility jacket.

The barn jacket:
It’s the new shape jacket on the block. It’s a utility jacket. It’s big. It’s square. It’s cool. It’s like a peacoat but country. Big for next winter. Invest now. Go for cotton, it’s and it’s practical too. Wear it with slouchy jeans or white chinos. And white pointy flats. Wear it layered over a white tee with a pencil skirt and kitten heels. Go for all fifi approved colours. So brown, camel, khaki and caramel.

The suede blazer :
I have to include this because it’s the jacket of the season ( In Europe) so I say let’s get in on the trend early. And you can wear it now. Why not? It’s perfect for this chilly spring. A caramel suede jacket /blazer( not black) is going to slip right into your spring summer wardrobe. That’s because it loves to be seen with white . It loves to be seen with denim. It will look great over a white tank with chinos. And you could go the whole Prada way and wear with a white skirt.

The khaki utility jacket:
It’s not a blazer but just as chic. It might be a shacket. It gives good coverage and shape. But it looks casual but cool. It should be long. it should have pockets. It should be slouchy so go up a size. Wear over head to toe over white. Over layers of different tones of green and khaki. Wear it over a white tee with jeans. Looks great with a straight denim skirt. Fill up the pockets and ditch your handbag. Hands free: That’s why it was invented !

The bomber jacket:
It’s new, it’s cool, it’s also a great piece to have because it’s short. It looks good with all your high waist pants and skirts and jeans. To show off the waist that you might have. Or give the illusion you do ! Go for neutrals, brown or I have one in cream. This one in denim is the coolest. . Linen is chic in a bomber and so cotton. It’s like a cardigan but cooler. And I am not a fan of cardigans. But I love a bomber !

The shacket:
It’s a shirt slash jacket. Get it? It’s a shacket ! It might be in denim. It’s like a shirt on steroids. It’s big and oversized. Perfect for casual weekends. You toss over a white tee. Go for khaki, denim, white or taupe. You wear it undone and it just hangs like a jacket. Sometimes called an Overshirt. Good with capris pants , stirrup pants, with straight jeans because you get volume on top.

The crop trench:
Love a trench. So it goes without saying a crop trench is like an expresso instead of a latte. Same impact and injection of energy as a long trench but easier to sock down ! Again it’s more casual than a long trench. Works for travelling too. Because it’s not a huge coat that gets bulky on a plane. It should be beige, camel or neutral or beige. Ha surprise! Just so much better in a lighter colour.  It can be long and slouchy over the bum for casual weekends. But short and cropped like this and like this is so chic with high waist anything. They’re the best !

The sleeveless vest or jacket.
I’ve been banging on about these for years. Why? Because they are so damn practical ! A blazer without sleeves :what more do you want in summer? It means you get the coverage and structure of a blazer but you’re not dying of heat. Perfect layering piece over a knit or tee in spring, with nothing underneath in summer. It’s relaxed but polished. A slouchy vest is cool too. Black is chic in summer and a neutral one like this one is great. Wear with white jeans, slouchy chinos and yes even Bermudas.

A parka.
Love and adore a parka. Celine showed a beige parka on the runway years ago 2016 and I was hooked. Suddenly not just for birdwatchers or train spotting . It needs to be in an exaggerated shape. It can be short and cropped or long is so cool. Chic in a brown or neutral. Means you can toss it over anything daggy lurking in your wardrobe. And you look good. Toss on a cool cross body bag. Or bum bag. Suddenly you’re chic. which is the aim non?
