Skirts : Which ones to buy & How to wear them for winter #luxetoless.
What : A Skirt for winter.
Which: It should be midi. So let’s just discuss length right now. It’s important. Because I am not keen on the maxi-right-down-to-the -floor skirts. Just wrong unless you’re at a black tie ball. In winter especially wrong. I think mid shin length ( whether straight or A line) works really well because your knee high boots can comfortably sit under it. And if you’re wearing shoes you’re showing some leg. This is good because it freshens it up. Breaks up the mass of fabric. Lightens the look. And looks appropriate when you’re out and about doing your thang. Shoes are SOO tricky with a long -to-the -ground skirt. Very hard to pull off. But don’t be put off by the length : just buy it and get it taken up. End of story.
What else to look for ? Go for an A line cut which is the most versatile shape. Looks “ flattering” if that’s what you want. Also an A line skirt means you can wear with flats AND heels. A straight pencil midi skirt? I don’t about you but I am not keen on flats with that style of skirt. If you go for a straight midi skirt make sure you have side pockets. Or some kind of details like a zip fly. Otherwise it’s a snoozefest. And wear with knee high boots ( see how to wear below).
Love a long pleat skirt in winter. It might be small pleats or wide : both are right. ( tip always go a size or two up with pleat skirts so they don’t dig into the “ situation ”. Uncomfortable and anything tight doesn’t look effortless).
In terms of colours: You know the drill. Go for black, brown , grey and tan. (Duh. All FiFi approved colours) Denim is chic. So is khaki. A leather skirt in winter is so right and so is suede. I love a wrap style, a cargo wool skirt and anything that flips out at the hem. But don’t be put off by wearing a cotton skirt ( unless you’re freezing) for winter. A lot of my skirts are in trans seasonal fabrics and I swap out my white tee for a slouchy knit and boots when it gets cold.
Why: Because it’s a big trend of the season. And into next , next winter. Meaning ? Buy early in the trend and get years of wear. ( Knee lengths skirts are on the horizon so you can always get it taken up in a few years). Because a midi skirt is modern and a great alternative to a dress. Because it will seamlessly slide into your wardrobe. Because if you’re clever with fabric you might wear now in winter with boots and a sweater. But in summer the same skirt will work with flats and a Tee. Because you can wear a midi skirt with casual sweaters and sneakers on the weekends or joosh it up going out for dinner with boots or heels.
Wear: It’s always about the shoes. Or in this case boots! Knee high boots. With a midi skirt? A match made in heaven. They might be pointy heels or chunky flat boots. Just make sure the top of boots sit under the hem of the skirt. NO GAP. It’s a modern silhouette and I’ve been writing about it since 2017. Which means that if you were smart and listened to FiFi you would have had 7 years wear. Good work. Of course the look of an Aline midi skirt with boots is still going strong for a more years. Invest now and get seasons of wear. If you go for shoes then I like a Mary Jane or lace up platform brogues. Slingback kitten heels are chic too with a skirt. Or you can embrace the pantyhose with open toe sandals for winter. It’s a thang!
In terms of tops with a skirt for winter? For me it’s about knits, knits and more knits. Oversized and long over the skirt, or half tuck is good. But the shorter sweater is here and it looks so great with a high waist A line skirt.
Another tip: make sure your coat is the same length as the skirt. There is nothing worse than the coat that sits shorter than the skirt. It’s just not polished. Or Chic.
