From Armani to Paris Hilton and Lady Pamela Hicks, these are the major literary moments from Tatler
Whips, Cleo Watson
Having written for Tatler, Cleo Watson is no stranger to political reportage. Now, she’s hitting bookshops with her own writing: a gripping political novel following the stories of three young women who arrive in Westminster from very different backgrounds, and who have front-row seats as they watch a Prime Minister lose an incredibly important European vote and the commencement of a leadership contest. Whips, due to be published in May, features scenes of ‘couples having sex on desks in the Commons offices, in the press room and at Chequers’, and has been described as ‘a cross between House of Cards, The Thick of It and 50 Shades of Grey’, according to The Times.

The Fraud, Zadie Smith
Zadie Smith’s first novel since 2016’s delectable Swing Time is also the first time she’s written historical fiction. It’s based on an actual (and sensational) Victorian trial, in which a man claimed to be Sir Robert Tichborne, a baronet believed to have perished in a shipwreck. The stranger-than-fiction story will feature a host of real-life characters, from Eliza Touchet, an acquaintance of Charles Dickens, to Andrew Bogle, a former slave turned major witness in the trial.

High Time, Hannah Rothschild

Described by Nigella Lawson as ‘sheer escapist bliss’ and as ‘pure joy’ by India Knight, this is a must-read for 2023.

The publication of his 14th novel – the first since the incident happened – is bound to see the literary world embrace one of its most important figureheads.
