As part of the 2016 British Vogue Festival Grace Coddington and Lucinda Chambers took to the stage at the Royal Geographic Society in London to talk about Coddington’s life and work in fashion.

“I must be the last remaining person sketching at a show. I’m not very fast at making my mind up and so that’s why I draw everything.” On Fashion Week

“Everything you see is a reference – a book on Matisse, someone on the subway, it’s when you mix them together that you make it yours.” On Her References

“The Sixties were incredible. It was exciting and inspiring. I was happy then – if I wasn’t miserable about a boy I was happy.” On The Sixties

“I thought I knew everything until I went on my first shoot when I realised that I knew nothing. It was really worrying. When I realised it I just thought, ‘Well I’m stuck with it now, so give it a try.'” On Her First British Vogue Shoot

“When it’s right, it’s right. When it’s wrong, it’s wrong. I’m picky and I don’t like compromising. I feel when a photograph is right. You don’t have to always like the photographer, but you do have to admire them. You have to go beyond the person. It’s a language, you have to understand them and they have to understand you.” On Working With Photographers

“I don’t mess around with the clothes. I’m very fussy with what I photograph and so I think if it’s good enough to be in Vogue, then I don’t mess with them. A good shoot starts with the clothes, that’s why I go to all of the collections.”  On Choosing Her Looks

“Trends are prominent but boring – it’s easy to do what everyone else does, it’s more interesting to do something different.” On Trends

“These days they are more like my daughters and my grandaughters. You have to really love a girl to dress her. I have trouble dressing people I don’t like. I love to work with new faces.” On Models

“I used to be able to predict if a girl was going to be successful but now I find it more difficult. It’s based on how many things you have on Instagram, not the person. It’s harder.” On Fashion Foresight
