Your shopping list.

A winter coat:
It should be camel or grey. Why? Because it adds a bit of colour (!).  Toss over all your boring black basics and you have instant wardrobe update. It should have a slouchy feel. It can be belted or loose. It must be long. I’m talking long enough to go right over your nobbly knees. Wear with jeans, flares or a leather skirt. Wear with sneakers ( see here on The FiFi Report), boots or loafers. Buy from Max Mara,  or Jac and Jack, and Seed.

A navy knit.
This handy little navy number that is more flattering next to wrinkles than black. It needs to be a fine knit ( but can be baggy shape) so you can wear under everything from a peacoat to a long cardigan. Style tip: Layer grey on grey , navy on navy , camel on camel. You want a knit that might be ribbed like this number from SABA ( works wonders with high waist jeans or skirts and baggy pants) or go for a major sleeve detail a la Celine ( thank you Scanlan & Theodore). A poloneck is newer but a round neckline like these from Uniqlo is totes chic.
Rule #1: Navy looks fabulous with black. Repetez apres moi.

The crop black flare.
These are the new black pant of the season. You need them. They are a wardrobe essential. I lOVE them because they instantly update all my old pieces. I suddenly look cool again just by changing the shape of my black pants. It’s a miracle! They should be croppped above the ankle with a slight kick flare. They can be in denim or twill. I will wear with round neck sweaters under my long line vest with chic block heels. Also wear with sneakers or ankle boots that sit just under the hem.
Shop from Country Road, Scanlan Theodore and Asos.

White sneakers:
I’ve been banging on about white shoes and namely white sneakers for about 3 years now. There is something about white shoes that suddenly joosh up a look. And they ‘aint going nowhere. For now. I say make the most of the comfortable shoe trend. You want plain white in leather or canvas. You want to wear with jeans, crop flares or yes, slouchy grey pants.
Shop from Rag and Bone, Or Witchery or converse

The pretty poets blouse.
I think black and sheer is the way to go with a blouse. White is chic too like this one from Michael Kors. Look for big poets sleeve action, lace, spots and a victorian/ high neckline. (Because sheer and cleavage=tacky)(SOZ). THE handy piece to take you from day to evening. Wear with jeans and sexy heels, tuck into a pleather skirt or with slouchy grey pants.  Toss over a plain cami or a sexy lace bra. Throw a camel coat or trench over your shoulders and head out the door. Done. Shop from Farfetch or Camilla Marc or lace from Theory

Slouchy grey wide pants.
Love grey pants. You can toss them back with a black blazer and don’t look like you are wearing a suit. (Hint: you don’t want to wear a suit)( unless is YSL. ). Here’s the thang: Wide grey pants look new and chic. Love with sneakers or heels. Love with a big sweater or with a sexy blouse. Love for their slouchiness.
Shop from Trenery and The outnet for Haider Akckerman  or Forever New .

The block heel shoe.
It’s a geeky chic granny look but it’s the hot shoe du jour. And that round toe and block heel looks new after seasons of sexy strappy stomp a licious heels. Gotta love a shoe that’s so comfortable you can shop for hours without even gulping down a panadeine. Look for suede, patent in black. If you can’t do the round toe then go for a pointy toe but make sure you have a block heel. Wear with all manner of pants, jeans and skirts. It’s a look changer. Instant updater. Life changer. Need now. Wear with cropped frayed jeans or with ankle crop flares.
Shop from Valentino, Seed and Altuzzara

The shoulder bag.
The new hot handbag is a little understated and not too big and not too small. Just right mama bear. It should be a shoulder bag. Something slouchy and easy to carry. Everyone is fashion has gone mad for the Loewe puzzle bag. Why not ? It’s gorgeous. If that’s not your budget then you can always grab a shoulder bag from Mansur Gavriel or try APC .
P.S Black is versatile with a capital V.

The peacoat:
It’s so classic but it’s soooo right again with the 70’s Parisian vibe happening in fashion. Navy is the colour. And a peacoat is always double breasted. (Worn undone it’s a sneaky way to cover the ‘situation’). It can be slightly longer or worn short and cropped.  Wear over a simple tee or knit and with sneakers or loafers.
Shop from Forever new or APC.

The flare jean:
An instant wardrobe updater. The crop flare jean is all you need. Go for a lighter wash. Cut them off with your scissors so they sit above the ankle. The flare looks fabulous with sneakers or flats. This is a relief. Especially for those such as my good self who struggle with skinny jeans and flats. yikes. Wear with the sheer blouse and the camel coat. Add block heels and the accessory du jour , the Gucci belt. Day to evening done.
Shop from net a porter, TopShop and General Pants.

The white loafer:
Flat shoes are back big time as you know. YAY. Loafers and especially Gucci loafers have been lurking on the groove horizon in black – which is still cool – for a few seasons. Now you want loafers in white. Please don’t – try to- frown. #can’taffordthebotoxwhenyoubuyGucci. Watch as they add vava voom and change your look in one one swipe of a credit card. Best with cropped jeans. Tricky with skirts. Unless you are a mutation of the species. Like Giselle.
Shop from Ferragamo and NineWest.

The long cardgian:
I blabbed on about the long grey cardigan here last season but it’s still a winner. What’s to love? It makes skinny jeans and sneakers look great. Meaning you can pull out your old pieces and they will get an instant joosh up. Grey is great, navy is chic, but black is probs too boring in a long cardigan. Layer grey over grey or white, over a stripe tee. With jeans. Duh. Looks totes fab with a leather skirt and boots.
Shop from Country Road and this fabulous one from Acne.

The wrap skirt.
It’s an updated shape from the pencil skirt.  The wrap skirt is sexy and chic. It should be knee length or slightly longer. Love it in leather. Love it in black or navy. Love it in suede. Love it with black opaques and ankle boots. Wear with a shorter knit or half tuck a chunky knit into the waist. For those with hips the fit’nflare flirty skirty like this grey one is still right for you.
Shop from French Connection , suede skirt from Frame or grab this navy skirt instore at COS.

The grey slouchy knit.
The sweater is the new jacket. Keep it simple. Keep it in dark grey. Keep it slouchy. Buy in a size bigger. It’s a wardrobe basic that will work with everything on this list. It’s your most versatile piece. Most importantly it works with everything you already own like white jeans and drop crutch pants. True story. Plus no need to iron. Now you’re talking.
Shop from Equipment, Acne and JacandJack.

The suede ankle boot.
Long boots are in this season but they are not as versatile as ankle boots. (FYI it’s a NONO to wear jeans tucked into long boots)( but you knew that)( I hope).  Ankle boots are a wardrobe staple so you must update to new style or – god fobid- you will look dagsville. Arrgggg! You need an ankle boot in suede and it must have a block heel. Chocolate brown is delicious because it will lighten the black and grey and camel. Ie your total wardrobe. Black is Ok too. Choose a round toe or pointy toe, whatever fits your tootsies. Wear with both skirts and cropped pants and you are go for launch. Ready for take off. Wintery cold weather here we come !
Shop from Wittner or Stuart Weitzman .
