One of the most important designers in American fashion, Donna Karan, is stepping down as chief designer of Donna Karan International. Karan, 66, plans to devote greater time to her Urban Zen company and foundation.
Her philosophy of a sophisticated system of dressing, ‘her seven easy pieces’ revolutionized the working woman’s wardrobe….

“The great thing about being a woman designer is you can be selfish and design for yourself”.

” The only place you never gain weight is your shoulder.” On her “cold shoulder”, the famous cut out dress worn by Hillary Clinton and Liza Minnelli.

“My daughter was stealing all my clothes and she needed clothes and I needed jeans that I couldn’t find in the market. I put a blazer with a pair of jeans because I wanted to see what else there was to wear with jeans,” On the launch of DKNY.

“For me, the body was very important — and clothing with comfort and fit. So thank God for stretch. I was the first person to put stretch into fabric,” she said during a discussion at The New School’s Parsons School of Design last year.

“It’s not got the pretentiousness of fashion. I’m bored with the concept of dressing ‘the executive woman.’ We’re all working today. These are clothes to have fun in.” Karan started DKNY, with a logo T-shirt originally sold in packets of three, like Hanes.

“[It’s] a smorgasbord of too much. You eat all of the food, more, more, more, more and more … All of this stuff, stuff, stuff, stuff; it’s going to obliterate each other. The whole thing has to be rethought, completely.” On advocating a saner alternative to fashion’s hectic seasonal cycle.

“I didn’t choose to be a designer. I was born a designer. I wanted to stay home and be a mom. But that’s not what the world served me.”

“I’m not trying to elevate women at the expense of men, but to say that a woman could go for it.” in 1992 at the dawn of the waif era, the designer, who often talks about her size-12 frame, made a point of casting size-8, 34-year-old Rosemary McGrotha as the commander-in-chief and first female President.
