What: A peacoat.

Which: It’s double breasted. Short. Sometimes over the bottom. It could have military buttons. Might be in navy or black. Not usually in a bright colour. #eeek ! May be in white or grey if you can find it. It is an outwear shorter coat. It’s not a blazer. Or a trench. It is a peacoat.

Please explain:  A pea coat is an outer coat, generally of a navy-coloured heavy wool,[1] originally worn by sailors of European and later American navies.[2] Pea coats are characterized by broad lapels, double-breasted fronts, often large wooden, metal or plastic buttons, and vertical or slash pockets. The term pea coat originated from the Dutch pijjekker or pijjakker, in which pij referred to the type of cloth used, a coarse kind of twilled blue cloth with a nap on one side.

Why: Because it’s a classic. Because eetsz oh la la! so French. Because it’s a more casual look than full on, big fat winter coat. Which means it works in a milder winter. Like Sydney. Sometimes in Melbourne. Because it has a certain elan and insouciant. And even if you can’t pronounce it you want to have it. Because we all want to look like Emmanuelle Alt , editor of Vogue Paris. ( see below).

Wear: With skinny jeans. Dot com. With skinny pants. With leather pants. Over a dress. Or just slung over your shoulders. In a very slouchy, baggy, cool way. With white shoes. Or ankle boots. Toteschic.
